Unread Email Icon is a Simple but Effective Way to Drive SharePoint User Adoption
Dave Coleman has a good tip in his article, “Help Drive SharePoint User Adoption Unread Email Icon” on the SharePointEduTech blog.
Coleman states that a key aspect of a user adoption strategy is giving people reasons to use SharePoint. One simple idea for this is to use an unread email Web Part. You can configure it to look at either an on-premise Exchange server, or a hosted Exchange.
It simply sits on your SharePoint site and shows how many unread emails a user has in their Exchange inbox and a click on the icon takes them straight to their mailbox.
The article includes a screen shot and a mock-up of a Metro style unread email icon. This solution works with both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010, and is simple, but works well.
