The Brainyard News has recently published an article titled “The Case for SharePoint Plus Silverlight” that reports on an interview with Bob German and Paul Stubbs, the authors of the newly published monograph SharePoint 2010 Development with Silverlight.

The book does not attempt to be an exhaustive study of Silverlight as related to SharePoint 2010, but does give an extensive overview of how to package an application created with Silverlight so that it works well in SharePoint.

Silverlight is a browser plugin technology, similar to Adobe Flash, but with important technical differences.  Silverlight has the capability to deliver entire applications or user interface components that can be interspersed with HTML Web content when embedded in a SharePoint page.

The authors have also included new ideas that were not documented anywhere, such as an easier way of packaging Silverlight applications for deployment on SharePoint.  The book’s audience is developers familiar with the .NET framework and has tutorials on the basics of both Silverlight and SharePoint development.

Once you understand the environment, you can do great things with it, German said. For example, he has had several clients ask for a richer people-search capability to supplement the social networking capabilities of SharePoint. The sample application he created for the chapter on Web services integration does just that.

SharePoint’s out of the box search options fall short of most users’ expectations.  To easily enhance your SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010 search and navigation, look to Smartlogic and the Semaphore Content Intelligence Platform.
