Finding Business Solutions by Tackling Workflow and User Interface Challenges
SharePoint adoption continues to grow making it and workflow more important every day. In “Business-critical processes with SharePoint and SQL,” the author gives some useful information on total cost ownership reduction and how to increase information access:
“The more significant source of such efficiencies is the impact related to reducing business risk; as more functions in the organization are exposed to the business data that is related to their daily responsibilities, and as workflows are implemented to support cross-team exception handling and problem solving, more and more of the risk associated with the underlying business processes can be mitigated, leading to more efficient processes and to reduced operational costs.”
An easy-to-use interface is a must if you’re going to expose employees to relevant business intelligence. SharePoint and SQL make this possible by employing a familiar interface that easily exposes the information to your employees, including the often majority that are not trained in the backend systems.
A note on workflows: In “Dan Holme’s Viewpoint on SharePoint Blog,” he points out the importance of checking into third-party tools. Analysts point to the extending capability of third-party tools rather than their replication or replacement approach. The long-term upkeep costs of developing your own tool could add up to three times the implementation cost.
You may want to check out Smartlogic. Their Semaphore technology provides rich content classification plus workflow allowing for improved business intelligence and enhanced access.
