A Useful Guide to SharePoint Success from Symon Garfield
Symon Garfield has developed a four-point framework to help a business get the most from its SharePoint implementation, and he outlines this in the article, “The Art of SharePoint Success: A Quick Start Guide.”
The four key elements of the framework are governance, strategy, architecture, and transition. The frequently misunderstood category of governance should align the use of SharePoint technologies with objectives and strategy and clearly define accountability for return on the investment. It is a good idea to have three teams to divide up these responsibilities. The SharePoint Strategy Team should have a written strategy that focuses on enabling specific processes or delivering general capabilities.
For architecture, it works well to present SharePoint as a set of business services, each with a different brand or identity. Transition refers to change at the organizational level, which should take an iterative approach, as well as the level of individual behavior, which should be guided by a transition plan. The article concludes:
“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to SharePoint, but my experience shows that the framework presented here is a flexible approach. It addresses all the key issues and helps organizations structure their thoughts and plans. Each of the four areas is a huge topic in itself, but I hope that this quick start guide will provide you with a starting point.”
There is also no one-size-fits-all approach to SharePoint search. For the enterprise, out of the box SharePoint search will not be enough to capture needed information in the vast realms of unstructured content. Smartlogic semantic search can respond to your information needs.
