We found a useful tip for creating a SharePoint content slider based on an Announcements list at “Creating your own Content Slider for SharePoint.”  The author created his solution after he found that the only list-based content sliders he could find were server licensed products. They admit:

“So being the hack programmer I am, I thought to myself, ‘Build your own content slider you dummy.’ Surprisingly, it isn’t that difficult, even for hacks like myself.”

The directions work for both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010, on both free and server-based products.  To create your content slider according to these directions, you will need jQuery, SP Services, jShowOff, Stramit, and CAML Viewer (or U2U CAML Builder).  Also, you will need WSS 3.0 or SharePoint 2007, SharePoint Foundations, or SharePoint Server 2010.

The article includes links and sample code, including a full script at the end.  We love this type of writeup.

SharePoint workarounds for small items can be great solutions.  However, if you need a total search and navigation makeover, look to Smartlogic.
