20K More Every Day
Holy moly. We knew that SharePoint usage was on the rise, but according to this article, it is skyrocketing. “Microsoft: We’re adding 20,000 new sharepoint users a day” reports on Microsoft’s recently released SharePoint sales figures. Have a hard time getting your head around that figure?
“Microsoft has been adding 20,000 SharePoint users per day, every day for the last five years, according to Jared Spataro, Director of SharePoint product management. That means 7.3 million new SharePoint users every year.”
This means that there are more than 100,000 million SharePoint users on the planet. This makes me curious about the number of SharePoint servers sold, but Microsoft isn’t telling, for now.
The article goes on to say that 2011 will be an important year for SharePoint because new functionality in SharePoint 2010 is going to be released into the cloud, reportedly around the first week of June. SharePoint 15, expected to be released in 2013, is in development, and the article conjectures that we might get a peek at that sometime in 2011 as well. Jared Spataro is also saying that customers are expressing interest in putting many kinds of functionally in the cloud, including portal, collaboration, content management and social-networking. However, customers who have custom business applications or who are linking to existing business applications from SharePoint will probably continue to use SharePoint hosted internally.
Smartlogic has kept pace with the ever-expanding universe of SharePoint. While others drown in data, Smartlogic delivers an enhanced level of tagging and classification capabilities that SharePoint does not provide out of the box, including automatic tagging and natural language processing to increase the findability of your enterprise’s information.
